Hygeia Hospital Tirana is the first and the only one Hospital in Albania having the most contemporary Radiotherapy and Oncology Center that uses digital techniques of Radiotherapy. Cancer represents the second cause of death, internationally, after heart disease. It is a condition which presented increased incidence in the 20th century and it is anticipated that it will become the leading cause of death in the 21st century. Cure with radiotherapy comes quite often with organ preservation i.e. in larynx, breast, bladder, prostate, limbs, rectum (avoidance of colostomy) etc.


HYGEIA Hospital’s Radiation and Oncology Center uses all the latest radiotherapy techniques:

  • Radiotherapy using 6, and 18 MV X-rays

Radiation therapy, sometimes called radiotherapy, involves the use of radiation to treat cancer and other diseases. Specially trained doctors called radiation oncologists use radiation to cure cancer, to stop a tumor from growing and destroying it ,or to relieve symptoms such as pain. Radiation has been used to treat cancer and other diseases for more than 100 years.

External beam radiation therapy is the most common method for giving radiation therapy. External beam radiation therapy is delivered from a machine called Linear Accelerator, that doesn’t touch your skin. Your doctor directs the radiation beams to the tumor inside your body to destroy it. This works because tumor cells are unable to repair themselves after being damaged by radiation, unlike normal cells. Typical external beam radiation is given daily for several weeks. This allows doctors to deliver enough radiation to the cancer cells in your body, while allowing healthy cells time to recover. Radiotherapy succeeds in curing up to 85% of cancer patients without metastasis.Cure with radiotherapy comes quite often with organ preservation i.e. .in larynx, breast, bladder, prostate, limbs, rectum (avoidance of colostomy) etc.

To this purpose in the HYGEIA Radiotherapy and Oncology Department, we use the most modern technology of 3D conformal and intensity modulated 3D conformal radiotherapy (IMRT).
Hygeia Hospital contributes to the treatment of malignancies, both in the field of prevention-early diagnosis (Check-up department cytology, mammography, molecular biology, PET-CT), Outpatient Clinics, Laboratory control), and in the field of treatment. (Center of Radio therapeutic Oncology, gamma Knife, Prostate brachytherapy, Department of Medical Oncology, Surgery, Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematology, Oncology). All Departments offer high standard services. They are staffed with specialized medical and paramedical personnel, feature modern, state-of-the-art equipment and international standards building infrastructure.

Radiotherapy is one of the main methods of treatment of cancer. The others being surgery and chemotherapy. Based on international statistics, 60% patients suffering of malignancies will need to receive Radiotherapy during their treatment, aiming for radical treatment or for pain relief. Radiotherapy is based on modern technology. Complicated and costly equipment, powerful computers and modern knowhow are required.

Since 2010 the Radiation Oncology Department of HYGEIA Hospital provided for the first time in Albania 3D Conformal Radiotherapy 3dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3D CRT) uses many radiation beams of uniform intensity, the shape of which is such that it adjusts itself to the tumor-target. The shape of the beam is formed with the use multileaf collimators (MLC).

Starting from April 2015, IMRT was introduced for the first time in this country. In IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy). The distribution of the beams intensity which are finally applied on the patient and the way this distribution is achieved, are determined with the use of advanced algorithms and inverse treatment planning techniques with the help of computers. The inverse treatment planning differs from conventional planning in the sense that first the required result on the tumor-target and healthy tissue, relating to the radiation dose the patient will receive is accurately determined and then, the number and shape of secondary beams which will achieve this result are determined. In essence, the radiation beams of modulated intensity which achieves the dose distribution, which will offer the required result, are determined.

Up to now thousands of patients have been treated using 3D conformal radiotherapy and IMRT radiotherapy techniques with excellent results and minimum side effects.
In 2012 a PET-CT was introduced for clinical use in Hygeia Hospital Tirana which is considered as the most advanced imaging and diagnostic method for cancer, providing accurate localization of the target for the purposes of treatment planning.

The Radiation Oncology Department of HYGEIA Hospital with the clinical use of the Elekta AxesseTM and two Elekta SynergyTM linear accelerators, which offer capabilities like Image Guided Radiation Therapy(IGRT), Stereotactic Radiotherapy(SRT)-Radiosurgery(SRS) techniques and Volumetric Modulated Radiation Therapy, moved towards the most advanced radiotherapy applications. These new radiotherapy techniques improved greatly the effectiveness of 3D conformal radiotherapy and IMRT. With the utilization of IGRT the accurate positioning of the target is achieved by imaging at the time of treatment with the patient lying at the treatment position. The PTV target is available in 30 sec at the monitor and all the necessary corrections and adjustments for the position of the patient are made roboticaly immediately afterwards. That way maximum conformance of the radiation beam to the target is achieved. Recently (March 2015) the most advanced and sophisticated ELEKTA linear accelerator, VERSA HD, which incorporates the most recent technology achievements was installed and clinically used. This linear accelarator is the first to be installed in Greece and Balkans and has the unique advantage of using a very high dose rate (flattening filter free technique) and performing all the advanced radiotherapy techniques (IMRT, VMAT, IGRT) in very short time, thus increasing treatment efficiency.

The Oncology Center is connected to Hygeia Hospital Tirana’s computer network and thus we are able to follow the patient through all of his/her stages (admittance, examinations, pharmaceutical treatment). Also, a special computer program coordinates appointments, treatments and repeat patient tests in order to offer services at the greatest speed possible.
