Overview
The department of Ear-Nose-Throat of Hygeia hospital Tirana is composed of a staff of Greek and Albanian doctors, which have an extensive experience in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the ENT pathologies.
The staff of ENT doctors of Hygeia Hospital Tirana, specialized and experienced, offer a wide range of services, covering all the pathologies of the ear, nose and head and neck, from the most simple diagnosing procedures up to the more complex ones, also treatment and surgical interventions. To have a more complete service, in the case of difficult cases, the staff of ENT doctors collaborates closely with other distinctive colleagues of other specialties like, maxillary facial surgeon, plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, etc, in order to offer an optimal and qualified medical service to our patients. We have to mention that the surgical interventions are performed with the help of experienced anesthesiologist specialists, specialized in the field of head and neck surgery.
Surgical Interventions
The staff of ENT doctors covers all the spectrum of ENT surgeries, or ear surgeries like:
-tympanoplastics
-treatment of cholesteatomas and their complications
-treatment of congenital malformations (atresia of the external hearing canal, congenital cholesteatoma, etc)
-surgical repairmen of otosclerosis
Another field of specialization of the team of this department is also the surgery of the base of the skull (acoustic neurinoma, paraganglioma, apical neuroma, cholesteatoma of the petrous bone).
Otoneurosurgical interventions
The staff of surgeons of this department performs in the most professional way the entire spectrum of functional surgeries of the nose and sinuses. The surgical operating rooms are supplied with all the devices and appliances necessary to perform FESS of all kinds, managing from anatomical problems, posttraumatic, polyposis, to acute or chronic inflammations, simple or complicated, etc. The team performs endoscopic treatment for tumoral pathologies (benign or malignant neoplasms of the nose or sinuses). Also we offer a successful endoscopic treatment of epistaxis (nose bleeding), loss of CS fluid (posttraumatic, post surgery or idiopathic), or for the problems of the tear canal. In collaboration with the respective team of other specialties, we perform surgeries for the orbit, decompression of the optic nerve or endoscopic treatment of hypophiseal adenomas, or for the lesions of basis crani which are included in what is called Rhino neurosurgeries.
In the cases when it is not possible to perform endoscopic treatment of specific pathologies, we do open surgery of the nose, like in the cases of lesions of the frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid or maxillary sinuses, we do osteoplastic of the frontal sinuses, we perform maxillectomy, etc. The technique of Midfacial Degloving is reserved for the most specific case of open nasal surgery.
The method of utilizing LASER (CO2 Laser) is applied mostly in the head and neck area. We have to mention the application of this technique in the benign and malignant tumoral masses of the larynx and hypopharynx. In our days, with the help of the laser, we are able to remove tumoral masses, for which previously they had to remove the larynx, thus, limiting the need for total laryngectomy.
In our department we have also fiber optic laser (YAG laser) (LISA laser) with the help of which we have performed a lot of laryngeal surgeries (posterior or lateral cordectomies, partial laryngectomies or nose surgeries, tear canal, tonsils, tongue surgery, etc).
Our staff has recorded very good results in the treatment of the head and neck neoplasms. These patients are managed by the staff or by the collaboration also with the team of maxillary facial plastic surgeons, in the cases when there is needed the fixing of esthetic or functional problems caused by the advanced disease. Also, the staff has a close collaboration with the oncologists, radiotherapeutic and chemiotherapeutic specialists, with a high percentage of success in the head and neck tumoral pathologies.
Unilateral paralysis, which is not balanced, associated with hoarseness, and aspiration, is treated with thyreoplastics, while bilateral paralysis is managed with posterior cordectomy utilizing CO2 laser. The patient that undergoes this procedure stays only one day in the hospital and immediately after it he has improved the ability to breathe or speak.
We have also to mention salivary gland surgeries, especially for the parotid gland neoplasms, which we perform utilizing the techniques of preparation and preservation of the facial nerve with the help of special devices and intraoperative discovery appliances.
Superficial parotidectomies are done utilizing very modern and thin endoscopic tubes, with which we have the possibility to study for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes the parotid glands (removal of salivary gland stones, etc).
Sleep Apnea
-
Why a sleep apnea diagnosis may save the life
- Sleep apnea is one of the most under diagnosed conditions.
- The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- People with OSA are at a greater risk for developing heart disease, heart attack, obesity, depression and sudden death.
- OSA causes individuals to stop breathing periodically throughout the night or breathe shallowly so the oxygenation level of their blood plummets.
- A person with OSA may wake up dozens of times an hour, yet these micro-awakenings aren’t usually conscious one so they may have no idea that they are happening.
- Weight is a risk factor for the development of OSA but neck architecture is also involved. You do not have to be overweight to have OSA.
- Symptoms of sleep apnea include: not feeling rested despite a good night’s sleep, excessive daytime or afternoon sleepiness, morning headaches, snoring, pauses in breathing or grunts, gasps or snorts.
- Screening for sleep apnea can be done at home or in a sleep lab.
Why is having a diagnosis of sleep apnea more of a blessing than a curse…because:
- Non-drug treatment is highly effective.
- Treating sleep apnea can be life changing in regard to people’s energy, sleep and reducing the risks of sudden death.
- The first step to getting treated for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is getting diagnosed.
- With proper diagnosis and treatment, the effects of OSA can be negligible.
- Left untreated, OSA
- Can seriously damage physical and mental health,
- Have negative personal and professional consequences,
- Can lead to premature death.
The cardiorespiratory polygraphy is a sleep apnea test that is used for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. The device is portable – about the size of a telephone handset. This test is realized with CIDELEC : CID-LXa
Due to their innovative technology, the CIDELEC systems provide accurate and reliable measurements. Patients benefit from a higher comfort during recording thanks to their state of the art ergonomy. For screening or treatment assessment, you have access to all relevant information about the patient’s sleep.

Impact of Treatment
- Better Sleep
- Effective treatment of OSA improves or even eliminates daytime sleepiness, as sleep quality improves.
- Getting a good night's sleep, can lead to significant improvements in other aspects of a person's life, including psychological health and happiness.
- Better Quality of Life

- reduces cardiovascular risk.
- users of CPAP had the same cardiovascular and mortality risk as people without OSA.
- In contrast, those with OSA who were not treated with CPAP had a marked increase in risk.
- Treatment of OSA can also result in better control or resolution of hypertension.
- Treating OSA may have positive effects on diabetes control, as well.
- Better for Society
- reduces the risks of other health problems,
- Reduce the rate of hospitalization
- healthcare costs are substantially reduced after treatment.
- People with OSA are up to ten times more likely to have a motor vehicle accident .
- OSA is a treatable condition
- effective treatment of OSA improves quality of life,
- improves physical and psychological health,
- reduces costs and dangers to society.
